Three fabulous (and affordable!) weekend trip destinations in Europe

Living in Europe is a perk we'll never underestimate and we are definitely making the most of it by exploring the prettiest (and sometimes underrated) weekend destinations that are only a cheap flight away!

Ohrid

The time we visited Ohrid was our first time in North Macedonia and we were very positively impressed! Ohrid is one of 28 sites accepted as both cultural and natural world heritage sites and it's the perfect destination for art, history and nature lovers. If you ever only have a day to spend in Ohrid you should absolutely take a walk around Kaneo where you will find the stunning Orthodox church of St John, perched over a cliff overlooking the lake. The Sveti Naum monastery is also a must-see, located 29km south of Ohrid. It is possible to book a taxi for a whole day for a very reasonable price to visit the Bay of Bones, a museum consisting of a dozen or so reconstructed stilt houses from the bronze age and be taken up the Galicica mountain for some stunning views. Our taxi driver was lovely, he even gave us water and apples. Ohrid is also home to a multitude of cats that seem to be well treated and fed... always a bonus!

Poznan

Poznan in Poland is a fairytale looking town often overlooked by tourists but ideal for a short break as everything that needs to be seen is at walking distance from the centre. Three days is the ideal amount of time to be spend in Poznan, with an afternoon spent taking a tour on an electric car, which costs about €20pp and is the perfect way to see most landmarks in only a couple of hours. Don't forget to visit the croissant museum and try one of the local St Martin's croissants... they are sooo delicious! We recommend staying at the Novotel which is very comfortable and close to the main square.

Porto

Porto is another city that offer activities for all types of travellers while also being small and compact to allow for a very fun packed weekend. After a first morning visiting the impressive Livraria Lello and climbing up the Clerigos tower, we rewarded ourselves with a glass of wines at one of the many bars on the Douro followed by a Francesinha for dinner at Brasao Aliados. On day 2 we started the day with a delicious pastel de nata at the Fabrica de Nata and took a tour of the Palacio da Bolsa. After exploring the Ribeira District, we headed to the other side of the river where we enjoyed a port tasting at the Sandeman port house (but there are other you can choose from!). On our last day we had breakfast at the fancy (and a bit more pricey) Café Majestic and again headed to Vila Nova de Gaia (where all the port houses are) to visit the Rosé Palace, a fun and quirky rosé themed museum full of photo opportunities. After the Rosé Palace, we randomly stumbled across the Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau where we had a bacalao fritter accompanied by an organ recital.
